Island hopping is a goal I have created for myself before I leave the island life in 6 months. I have lived on Oahu for five years now and I have only been to three of the beautiful islands of Hawaii. One of the most memorable trips I made inter-island was when my best friend, Jessica, came to visit me in Hawaii during the summer of 2014.
To make this trip worth while, we went around the island of Oahu first. Although it was Jessica's second time visiting, there was still a lot to see and explore. We went to Pearl Harbor, North Shore, Hanuama Bay, Ala Moana Beach Park, Waikiki, Lanikai and much more. We enjoyed two weeks surrounded by turquoise water while we ventured around the island and it was gorgeous!
We planned a trip to Maui to get a different island life experience since neither of us had been there. We stayed in a hostel right near the town of Wailuku which was conveniently located near grocery stores, the Maui Swap Meet, First Fridays and the creeks and green scenery of the beautiful Iao Valley.
I have to say that Maui was definitely a change of pace for me. Growing up in Los Angeles area (and going to school on Oahu) it was different being out in the "country".... there was more open land, beaches, and long stretches of highway.
Instead of bussing around the whole island of Maui, Jessica and I rented mopeds (for the first time) to get and it was the BEST DECISION EVER. Sure we probably shouldn't have rode the mopeds on the side of the highways or along the coast of Maui but we were safe about it. We were able to go to various beaches, find our way to the hotel and resorts side of the island located in Lahaina. We enjoyed Maui beer at Maui Brewing Company, food and beverages at the high end resort restaurants and shop around for any souvenirs worth buying.
We also had the adventurous opportunity to bike down the Haleakala Crater... it was insane!
We headed back to Oahu and enjoyed Jessica's last few days in Hawaii before she returned to California. We reminisced about the open land and less traffic island of Maui and we were happy we made the decision to island hop.
We were able to finish exploring more of what Oahu has to offer: beautiful scenery, hikes and the glorious feeling of paradise. We absorbed the hot summer sun and dove in the salty ocean water until we could no more.
It is always a fun time with my main squeeze, Jessica! We had a great two weeks of exploring, spending money (that we THINK we have, hahaha!), traveling, eating, drinking, and living in the moment. I am very fortunate to have a great friend who is willing to spend the time and THE MONEY to hang out and explore another state. No matter what, we always manage to have fun! Love you Jessica and I can not wait to travel more with you! :) Next off too...? ...........to be continued..........
